Hip & Knee Care
Hip problems are the result of hereditary influences, injury, and overuse, inflammation due to arthritis or from simple wear and tear.
Dr. Jefferson conservatively treats hip problems through modification of activity, medication, physical therapy or injections. If conservative treatments fail, Dr. Jefferson also provides hip arthroscopy, which may be used to treat a torn labrum, loose cartilage, joint inflammation and some inherited deformities. These surgeries are performed to improve your symptoms and prevent later development of arthritis.
If you already have arthritis, arthroscopy is not typically a helpful solution. If other conservative treatments fail to control your symptoms, you may be a candidate for a hip replacement.
A total hip replacement involves the removal of the arthritic ball and socket and replacing it with the components of the joint replacement system. This highly successful procedure helps eliminate hip pain and is frequently performed through the anterior supine approach. This approach helps speed recovery and decrease post-operative pain.
Knee injuries are often the result of injuries, overuse, etc. They can range from:
- Cartilage tears
- Meniscus tears
- Ligament injuries
Dr. Jefferson also uses viscosupplementation and PRP injections to help treat knee arthritis conservatively. A vast majority of patients are helped with these treatments, but when conservative treatments fail, we utilize arthroscopic and open surgical procedures.
Arthroscopic procedures can treat most problems in your knee, including a torn meniscus, roughened cartilage, loose bodies or ligament tears.
When arthritis is severe and all conservative treatments fail, a knee replacement may be necessary. A total knee replacement does not replace the entire knee, but the worn and degenerative joint surfaces. The tendons, muscles and most of the ligaments are left intact and the roughened cartilage surfaces are replaced by smooth metal and plastic components. Every attempt will be made to use a minimally invasive approach to treat your knee arthritis.
Knee replacements are a highly successful procedure. Dr. Jefferson performs this procedure with the assistance of a computer which improves component placement and decreases incision size. Dr. Jefferson will discuss which techniques best fit your knee problem.
